Hughster’s September Gig Guide

Saturday 1st September: The Laurels – Annandale Hotel – $13.30 + bf

One of the best Sydney bands going around at the moment, the Laurels are setting off on a tour of the country in celebration of their new album, “Plains”. Their grungy sound will suit the renowned rock-venue the Annandale Hotel to a tee.

Wednesday 5th September: YesYou – Beach Road Hotel – Free

Celebrated as one of the Triple J Next Crop Artists last year, Brisbane production duo YesYou have been busy writing and producing for the likes of Jinja Safari and DZ Deathrays. They’ve also been finishing off their own debut EP, which will include the current single “Frivolous Life”.

Wednesday 12th September: The Medics – Spectrum – $15 + bf

Hailing from North-Queensland, the Medics’ debut album Foundations has been one of the highlights of the year, having won a swag of awards at the recent National Indigenous Music Awards.

Wednesday 12th September: Twerps – Beach Road Hotel – Free

I included Twerps in last month’s gig guide, and in case you missed them (like me!), they’re in Sydney again this month. And this time, it’s free – no excuses dudes.

Thursday 20th September: Pond – The Metro – $22

For those who weren’t aware, the guys from Tame Impala play in another band, Pond, and funnily enough, they’re just as good! More of a psych-rock vibe to their music, they’re an experience to watch.

Monday 9th April: James Vincent McMorrow – The Factory Theatre – $33 + bf

James Vincent McMorrow’s first trip down under is blowing up. Having sold out two shows at the Vanguard, people power has won out with the first show being moved to the much larger Factory Theatre mean extra tickets are now on sale. Hurry.

Wednesday 11th April: Bleeding Knees Club – Beach Road Hotel – free

You could pay $12 to watch Bleeding Knees Club with Dune Rats later in the week, or you could see them for free at Beach Road. Your choice.

Thursday 19th April: Pond – The Standard – $15

From the young men who brought you Tame Impala, Pond will be touring in mid-April in support of their album release. Similar in style, the psych-rock maestros switch instruments in their second guise, just to show us how brilliant they are. Bastards.

Friday 20th April: The Medics – Goodgod Small Club – $10 + bf

Brisbane buzz-band The Medics are on many people’s lists for bands to watch in 2012, with the anticipated release of their debut album in May. Get a sneak peak when they visit Sydneyto see what all the fuss is about.

Wednesday 25th April: Van She – Beach Road Hotel – Free

Beach Road regularly offers up a smorgasbord of talent on Wednesday nights, and this week is perhaps the tastiest for some time. Aside from the reputable talents of Sydney-siders Made in Japan and Swimwear, Van She will be making their long awaited return to live music. A must.

Sunday 29th April: Last Dinosaurs – Oxford Art Factory – $15 + bf

Celebrating the release of their debut album, In a Million Years, Last Dinosaurs have put on a second show in Sydney after selling out the first. With demand soaring to see the young Brisbane band, get in quick.
