Rain&Hale know that ‘Opposites Attract’

We all know the time-honoured tradition. Boy meets girl, boy treats girl like crap, girl loves boy. Standard treat ’em mean keep ’em keen strategy. If you can empathize on any level, you are going to love this series of short plays aptly named ‘Opposites Attract’.

The Exchange Hotel in Balmain is quickly establishing itself as the new hot spot for independent theatre. Opening on June 5, it will host in its charming Chesterfield Room the debut production for Hot Room Theatre Group, an evening of light entertainment called Opposites Attract.

Featuring the titled one-act play, Opposites Attract by Bruce Kane, a romantic comedy told predominately as a series of dialogues between couples meeting and finding their way – and, sometimes, losing their way. Directed by and featuring Hot Room co-director Alison Lee Rubie, the show sets out to explore all the things that make modern romance so much fun including infidelity, emotional masochism, envy, bad sex, letting go and getting caught.

The second half features five comic sketches, two written for the occasion, and three classics from old Broadway and follies shows. Included in the line-up are Mourning Becomes Impossible; a sketch first performed on Broadway in 1932 about the hubbub surrounding the death of a famous film star. The Petrified Elevator; a Bob Hope vehicle from the Ziegfeld Follies in 1936. A post-modern relationship comedy-drama called Coffee from a late 50’s off-Broadway revue. Plus Tips; a new work by Queensland writer Jarryd O’Reilly, and Intertwining Monologue; a debut satire by award-winning Sydney writer and co-director of Hot Room Theatre Group, Steven Hopley.

Put together and performed by a talented young cast and crew, this eclectic evening’s entertainment will feature something for everyone!

Model Watch – ANJA KONSTANTINOVA

This Russian-born, Melbourne/Sydney based model is taking Australia by storm and has been cited as the next big thing to come out of our country. At just 163cm, the 20-year-old has been turned down by major agencies because she’s too short, she was the shortest model at RAFW this year. But, with a magazine cover and a string of fashion shoots, including four with Grazia magazine and Oyster safely tucked in her folio, she now aims to be the next Kate Moss. We think she’s just beautiful with her bright bleached blonde hair and eyebrows, big eyes and perfect pout.

Gary Bigeni – RAFW 2011/12

Well wasn’t last week crazy?! Fashion Week shows and after parties were on the schedule and we are only now catching up on sleep and the normal routine. Eeep!

We went to Gary Bigeni’s show last Wednesday at the Cargo Theatre and we were overwhelmed with the eye-popping colours. The colour palette included rustic orange, bright red, summer turquoise with a dash of neutral. Flowy pieces teamed up with structured leather jackets, block colours and thick diagonal stripes. The styling was minimal – mega hot heels, low pony tails and very bright red lipstick. Bigeni’s known for his subtle colour schemes. But not this year, he’s embraced bright colours and bold prints. He specialises in multidimensional tailoring and draping, creating wearable yet interesting pieces. He caught the attention of Australian retailer and fashion icon, Belinda Seper after graduating at East Sydney Design Tech in 2002. Through the support of Belinda, Bigeni’s label has come a long way, presenting a modern Australian style and is available at high-end boutiques both Australia wide and internationally.

Saving the day once again…

Got any vodka lying around? …Of course you do.

Not only vodka is great for consuming and abusing; it is also great to clean your gems.

If you can spare just a little, it’s great to clean hard stones or diamonds. Just pour some into a bowl, place your jewellery inside and swish it back and forth, then dry it off and you’ll be blinded by the sparkle! If it’s been too long since the last clean just soak it for a while then scrub it gently with an old toothbrush.

Ah vodka, is there anything you can’t do?
