Hughster’s Gig Guide

Wednesday 7th December: Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Oxford Art Factory – $28.70

NME described the Portland based, New Zealand founded trio’s sound as “a scruffy blend of shuffling funk and psych nostalgia that feels a lot more right than it should be”. This is probably the best way of describing Unknown Mortal Orchestra, an intriguing group which will be visiting our shores for the first time for the Summer Festival season. Support will be provided by Brisbane’s DZ Deathrays, who have a very amusing video floating around on youtube at the moment (wait till the end).

Friday 9th December: Chet Faker + Valar – Oxford Art Factory – Free

Chet Faker first caught our attention with his buttery rendition of Blackstreet’s 90s classic “No Diggity”. Making the trip up from Melbourne, his performance will be a combination of jazz, soul and electronic music. Sydney locals Valar will be providing strong support, with hype surrounding their latest EP, The Belly of the Whale, still echoing. Did I mention it’s free?

Saturday 10th December: Major Raiser Tickets for Tucker feat. New Navy – Gaelic Theatre – $24.00

Major Raiser are throwing their biggest event yet with the help of one of the most exciting bands floating around, Sydney’s New Navy. With the proceeds generated going towards a South African orphanage, all the more reason to get along to support a great cause. Also on the bill will be Rapids, Monks of Melonwah, Skryptcha and Sydney Girls Choir. There will also be interactive art adding to the atmosphere on the night.

Friday 24th February 2012: Death Cab for Cutie – Enmore Theatre – $67.10

Having recently released their seventh full album, Codes and Keys, Death Cab will be touching down early next year for their first tour since 2009. An incredibly enduring band, Death Cab have developed their sound to include a more sonic sound in addition to their well-known heartfelt lyrics and melodies.

Adelaide’s Leader Cheetah will be bringing their alternative country ruminations to Bondi Beach on Wednesday. Their recently released LP “Lotus Skies” has put them in the spotlight and big things are expected of the four lads after recent tours with Gomez and the Middle East. If you needed more convincing to drag yourself out on a school night, they’re being joined by psychedelic folk outfit Belles Will Ring. It’s free too.

Saturday 24th:The Gate @ Pablo’s – Pablo & Rusty’s Ryde – $12+bf presale

Who said there was no music culture in the suburbs? The Gate has put together another stellar line-up of experimental musicians, headlined by Sydney beat-maker Guerre. Albatross, Rainbow Chan, Option Command combined with DJ sets from Marcus Whale (of Collarbones fame), Lexy Savvides and Loopsnake complete the all-star cast.

Wednesday 7thDecember: Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Oxford Arts Factory – $28.70

This Portland based, New Zealand founded band will be gracing our shores for the first time at the end of the year. They combine break-beats with muffled 70s pop/psychedelia to give them a completely original sound. This will be one of the gigs of the summer, guaranteed.
