Splendour in the Grass 2012

 Splendour in the Grass is coming home! After two years on sabbatical at the Woodfordia Festival Grounds (in QLD), Australia’s premier Winter Festival is returning to Byron Bay (July 27-29). With a purpose built festival ground still in the works, the three-day music love-in will be held at the Belongil Fields, the site of the festival’s birth in 2001.

With a smaller capacity (Belongil’s capacity is just over 17,000) and a more “Splendour-friendly line-up” this year, the festival sold out in under an hour – the quickest sell-out in the festival’s history.

Two of the Rain&Hale family will be packing their bags and road-tripping up the Pacific Highway for the weekend, and we’ve both put together our top-fives – an extremely arduous task, sifting through the incredible line-up of international and local talent.

Hughster’s July Gig Guide

Thursday 5^th July: Bon Chat Bon Rat + Collarbones – FBi Social (Kings X Hotel) – $12

Expect beats in large quantities from experimental pop acts Bon Chat, Bon Rat and Collarbones. Both happy to push musical boundaries, they’re setting off an a joint national tour, stopping off at FBi Social for the Sydney leg of their journey.

Saturday 14^th July: Van She – The Metro – $29

After taking a lengthy sabbatical since the release of their last album, V, Van She is back with new material – including the singles “Idea of Happiness” and “Jamaica”. These singles will feature on their new album due for release on July 6, and they’ll be touring to celebrate.

Wednesday 18^th July: The Rubens – Oxford Art Factory – $15+bf

Out of nowhere, the Rubens have risen to be one of the most hyped acts of the last year. After their track “Lay it down” hit number #57 in last year’s Triple J Hottest 100, the band has been selling out show after show around the country. They’re another band with a new album scheduled, and have a pair of shows in Sydney. The Thursday show has sold out, so get in quick!

Friday 20^th July: Northeast Party House – Goodgod Small Club – $12+bf

Melbourne-based Northeast Party House put on a huge show, and their brand of frantic and upbeat pop music has been likened to that of Foals. If that sounds good, it’s made even better with Sydney locals Panama and Colour Coding completing a stellar (and cheap) line-up at Goodgod.

For all of you who didn’t manage to snap up Splendour in the Grass tickets, there are plenty of sideshows in Sydney, with the likes of Lana Del Ray, the Smashing Pumpkins and Band of Skulls all stopping by. Keep checking in with Rain&Hale for plenty more Splendour in the Grass news during July.
